Class Description

Dancers may spend more than one year at each level. Dancers who progress out of the level do so based on the development of their abilities, physical strength, and focus. Our ultimate goal is for each student to be placed in the class that will most benefit their development as a dancer.

Proper attire is a necessary tool in teaching correct body placement in dance. We ask that all students respect and follow the dress codes.

Dancers must be enrolled in either Ballet or Jazz in order to participate in Contemporary, Musical Theater, or Leaps and Turns.

Creative Dance - This class is for our three year olds. It is a fun introduction to dance utilizing movement, musicality, and creativity. (45 min.)

Combo 1 - This class is an introduction to ballet, tap, and jazz for our dancers that are four or five years old. Students are taught the basics of each style in a way that is age appropriate. (60 min.)

Combo 2 - This class consists of thirty minutes of ballet and thirty minutes of tap for our dancers that are five through six years old. It continues teaching the styles of dance while also providing the opportunity to learn how to focus for longer periods of time in each dance style. (60 min.)

Combo 3 - This class consists of thirty minutes of jazz and thirty minutes of tap for our dancers that are six through eight years old. It focuses on age appropriate movement and students are encouraged to also enroll in Ballet 1.

Ballet (Level 1 through Level 4A) - Ballet is a classical dance form, developed in the sixteenth century, which focuses on grace and precision. It is performed in ballet slippers and possesses an ethereal quality of movement. (60 or 90 min.) Levels Beginning through Advanced.

Pre-Pointe - This class is by invitation only. The focus is to prepare dancers who would like to study pointe work in the future. It builds strength and proper alignment for point technique. (60 min.)

Pointe - This class is by invitation only. This class is for dancers who are at least 12 years of age and possess the strength and proper alignment to perform pointe work. We do not recommend pointe work for dancers younger than twelve as their bones and ligaments have not been fully developed. (60 min.)

Modern 1, 2 & 3 - Modern 1 is offered to Grade 4 and higher. Modern 2 & 3 are for our students who have taken Modern before. Modern dance was developed at the turn of the twentieth century with the intent to rebel against the formal quality of classical ballet. It is performed in bare feet and possesses a grounded movement quality. Popular modern dance creators include Alvin Ailey, Martha Graham, Jose Limon, Paul Taylor, and Lester Horton. (60 min.)

Jazz (Level 1A through Level 4A) - Jazz was originally made popular in musical shows on Broadway. Though the style of jazz dance continues to evolve with each passing year, it emphasizes isolated movement of individual parts of the body and precise footwork. While jazz was also created to rebel against ballet technique, a command of ballet technique is necessary to progress to higher levels of expertise in jazz. This form of dance is performed in jazz shoes. (60 or 90 min.) (Beginning through Advanced)

Tap (Level 1A through Level 4A) - Tap dance became popular in the United States during the nineteenth century. The name comes from the tapping sound made when the small metal plates on the dancer's shoes touch a hard surfaced floor. This style of dance is performed in tap shoes and can have a more polished Broadway style or a more grounded style made popular by dancers such as Savion Glover. (60 min.) Levels Beginning through Advanced.

Contemporary 1 & 2 - Contemporary 1 is for our students 7th grade and higher who are currently enrolled in either ballet or jazz. Contemporary 2 is for our students 8th grade and higher who have taken Lyrical or Contemporary before.  It is recommended that adults are at an intermediate level of dance to feel comfortable in the class. Contemporary dance is the name given to a group of twentieth century concert dance forms. This class is a fusion of Lyrical, Contemporary, and Modern. This form of dance can be performed barefoot or in shoes that have a protective covering for the ball of the foot. . (60 min.)
